I love DIY projects, especially when it comes to skincare! There is something so fulfilling and grounding about making your own products that you use on your body every day. I can control the quality of the ingredients and know exactly what is in my lotion. I chose ingredients that are pure, simple, and supportive. This Creamy Citrus Dream Tallow Body Lotion is rich, silky, and infused with a bright citrus aroma and a hint of vanilla. It lifts my spirits every time I open the jar. The scent is reminiscent of summer days at the beach, enjoying a frozen, creamy, and delicious orange creamsicle! It melts beautifully into the skin, supports the moisture barrier, and leaves you glowing without feeling greasy. Because it’s so rich and nourishing, you only need a small amount, truly, a little goes a long way with this lotion! It’s luxurious, but incredibly easy to make, perfectly embodying the Alma Vida way!

Why I Love This Lotion

Tallow is rendered fat from an animal; in this lotion, I used beef tallow. It is one of the most skin‑compatible fats you can use. It is naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, deeply moisturizing, and incredibly soothing for dry or sensitive skin. Paired with olive oil for softness, beeswax for structure, and a trio of citrus essential oils for a bright, uplifting scent, this lotion becomes a dreamy, whipped, nutrient‑dense treat for your skin.

 Equipment Needed

  • Double boiler (or heat‑safe bowl over a pot)

  • Heat‑safe spatula or spoon

  • Hand blender or stand mixer

  • Glass measuring cup

  • Kitchen scale (for accurate ounces)

  • Tongs (to remove vanilla bean)

  • Clean, airtight jar for storing

  • Paper towels (for clean‑up — essential when working with beeswax)

 Ingredients

  • 3 oz grass‑fed tallow

  • 2 oz olive oil

  • 1 oz beeswax

  • 1 whole vanilla bean (optional, adds warmth + aroma)

  • 10 drops lemon essential oil

  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil

  • 10 drops grapefruit essential oil

  • 1 clean, 8-oz airtight jar

Instructions

  1. Set up a double boiler over medium heat.

  2. Add the tallow, olive oil, beeswax, and vanilla bean (if using).

  3. Allow everything to melt slowly, stirring occasionally until fully liquified.

  4. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly, stirring every few minutes.

  5. Once it begins to thicken and turn cloudy, remove the vanilla bean pod.

  6. Add your essential oils and stir to combine.

  7. Using a hand blender, whip the mixture until creamy and fully emulsified.

  8. Transfer to a clean, airtight jar and let it finish setting at room temperature.

Add everything to the double boiler and warm until completely liquefied, then take it off the heat, let it cool, and remove the vanilla bean. Pour in your essential oil blend to transport you to citrus dreams.

Important Clean‑Up Instructions (So You Don’t Clog Your Drain)

Beeswax hardens quickly and can clog drains, so here’s the safest way to clean your tools:

  1. Wipe everything down first. Use paper towels to remove as much melted tallow + beeswax as possible before washing.

  2. Use very hot water. Rinse bowls, utensils, and your double boiler with hot water to melt any remaining residue.

  3. Add a little dish soap directly to the warm tools. This helps break down the fats before they cool.

  4. Avoid pouring waxy water down the drain. If you have a lot of residues, wipe again with paper towels and discard them in the trash.

  5. Optional: Keep a dedicated “DIY skincare” cloth or scraper for waxy projects.

Tips & Variations

  • Swap olive oil for jojoba or sweet almond oil for a lighter feel.

  • Add a pinch of arrowroot powder for a more matte finish.

  • Use lavender or chamomile essential oils for a calming nighttime blend.

  • Add a teaspoon of vitamin E oil for extra skin nourishment.

How I Use It in My Routine

I love applying this lotion after a warm bath or shower, when my skin is still slightly damp and ready to drink in moisture. The citrus aroma feels uplifting, the texture melts beautifully, and the tallow leaves my skin soft, nourished, and deeply supported. This lotion is especially useful during dry seasons.

Closing Thoughts

This Creamy Citrus Dream lotion is one of those simple, grounding recipes that remind you how nourishing it can feel to make something with your own hands. Save this for the next time you want a little luxury, without the toxins, fillers, or mystery ingredients.
